Presentation of the case
Rodolfo Almirón is a former Argentinean police officer and alleged leader of the right-wing paramilitary group Alianza Anticomunista Argentina, also referred to as “Triple A”. The Triple A operated during both the presidencies of Juan Perón (1973-1974) and Isabel Martinez de Perón ( 1974 to 1976), before the Military Juntas, and is suspected of having eliminated up to 1,500 people linked to the left wing Montoneros insurrectional movement, as well as judges, political opponents, and social activists.
In 1975, Rodolfo Almirón left Argentina for Spain, where he lived until 2008. On 26 December 2006, Argentinean federal Judge Norberto Oyarbide issued an arrest warrant against Rodolfo Almirón, stating that the crimes for which he was accused were crimes against humanity exempt of any statute of limitations. Rodolfo Almirón was arrested on 15 February 2008, and extradited to Argentina on 19 March 2008. His trial before the criminal court of Marco Paz (near Buenos Aires) started the same year. On 4 June 2009, proceedings were suspended after Rodolfo Almirón was declared unable to stand trial due to his poor health. He died in custody on 12 June 2009.
