Presentation of the case
Aprecio Guterres, a.k.a. ‘Mau Buti’, was charged with murder as a crime against humanity for the murder of East Timorese survivors of a massacre in Mulau, East Timor committed as part of the widespread and systematic attacks on the civilian population in 1999. Guterres was a member of the Dadrus Meraj Putih pro-autonomy militias, one of more than 25 militia groups operating in East Timor in 1999.
Despite the Prosecution seeking to withdraw the Indictment, the case proceeded to trial, where Guterres was acquitted of all of the charges against him.
