General Introduction
Altus is a global alliance working across continents and from a multicultural perspective to improve public safety and justice. In April 2004, six established NGOs and academic centres joined together to form the Altus alliance. With members spanning five continents, Altus offers a truly global perspective on issues of safety and justice, a greater capacity to work across borders, and a larger role for civil society in advancing justice.
Altus places special emphasis on police accountability and the quality of police oversight, serving as a source of knowledge and innovation for governments, police leaders, human rights activists, legislators, journalists and citizens around the world, concerned about the effective and fair control of policing. The global alliance of organisations which Altus is made up of consists of more than 200 professionals working in different languages, cultures, and legal traditions.
Altus has a small secretariat in The Hague working in conjunction with regional representatives based in each Altus member organisation. The office is responsible for the daily operations of the alliance.
