Hariri tribunal set to come to The Hague

The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, has welcomed the Netherlands’ decision to agree to host the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. The Tribunal is being set up to try those responsible for the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.

On 15 August 2007, the Secretary-General received a letter from Dutch Prime Minister, Jan Peter Balkenende, informing him that the Government of the Netherlands was favourably disposed to hosting the Special Tribunal. A certain number of technical issues are still to be discussed, such as the legal framework, financial resources, an appropriate location for the court and where convicted persons would serve their sentence.

In July 2007, the UN Secretary-General officially invited the Netherlands to consider hosting the Tribunal. In doing so, Ban Ki-moon cited the “unique and essential role of the Netherlands” in the development of international justice and the rule of law.
