Presentation of the case
Dragoje Paunović was the leader of a small Serb military formation of the Rogatica battalion. On 15 August 1992, he ordered soldiers to take civilians and to use them as a human shield on the frontline. After having used these civilians, Paunović ordered soldiers to kill them. He personally participated in the killing, which resulted in the death of 24 civilians.
On 26 May 2006, Dragoje Paunović was found guilty of crimes against humanity (murder, persecution and inhumane acts) and sentenced to 20 years’ emprisonment. This decision was upheld on appeal on 27 October 2006.
