Presentation of the case
Nikola Andrun was deputy head of the Gabela ”camp “ (municipality of Čapljina) during the second half of 1993, at the time of a conflict between the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Croatian Defense Council (HVO). As the indictment alleges, between July and September 1993 the accused was present during several incidents of abuse of prisoners, either as an observer or as a direct participant. These incidents included torture and beatings.
Nikola Andrun was charged with the criminal offense of war crimes against civilians. On 14 December 2006, the Trial Panel found him guilty of war crimes against civilians and sentenced him to 13 years' emprisonment. On 20 August 2007, the Appellate Panel issued a decision revoking the Trial Panel’s verdict and ordering retrial before the Appellate Panel.
On 19 August 2008, Nikola Andrun was found guilty of the criminal offense of war crimes against civilians and sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment.
