Presentation of the case
Between 1975 and 1979, the Khmer Rouge policy resulted the death of millions of Cambodians before being overthrown by Vietnam in January 1979. As a result, the “Revolutionary council” newly installed, established a special tribunal, the “Revolutionary People’s Tribunal”, and brought Pol Pot (Saloth Sar) and Leng Sary (Kim Trang) to trial in absentia for the crime of genocide as defined in the United Nation’s genocide convention of 1948.
In August 1979, they were both found guilty and sentenced to death.
