Milan LukicMore than two years after he was transferred to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), the trial of Milan Lukić will begin on Wednesday 9 July 2008 at 9.00.

Milan Lukić, who was arrested in Argentina and transferred to The Hague on 21 February 2006 after evading capture for almost seven years, is to be tried with his cousin and fellow Bosnian Serb paramilitary Sredoje Lukić.

The younger of the two cousins, Milan Lukić, was the leader of the “White Eagles” or “Avengers”, a group of local Bosnian Serb paramilitaries in Višegrad, south-eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the Indictment, the group worked with local police and military units in exacting a reign of terror upon the local Muslim population during the 1992-1995 conflict.

Sredoje Lukić was a member of the local paramilitary group led by his cousin.

Both accused have been charged with persecution as a crime against humanity, and murder and cruel treatment as a violation of the laws or customs of war.

Of the many brutal crimes alleged in the most recent indictment of 27 February 2006, Milan Lukić is accused of murdering approximately 70 Bosnian Muslim women, children and elderly men in a house in Višegrad. According to the Prosecution, Lukić barricaded the victims in one room of the house, set the house on fire and then fired automatic weapons at those people who tried to escape through the windows.

Both accused have pleaded not guilty to all charges.
