Presentation of the case
The State Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina handed down its verdicts on 29 July 2008, in its first case regarding charges of Genocide in connection with the 1995 Srebrenica massacre. Seven of the defendants were convicted of committing genocide and received sentences ranging from 38 to 42 years’ imprisonment. Four others were acquitted.
The eleven men, police officers and soldiers in the Bosnian wartime authorities, were charged with genocide under Article 171 the BiH Criminal Code. According to the Amended indictment of 24 June 2008, the accused took part in the execution of more than 1000 Bosniak prisoners in the warehouse of Kravica Farming Cooperative, 13 July 1995. This was allegedly carried out by the Army of the Serb Republic and the Police Force of the Serb Republic, with a common plan to annihilate a part of the Bosniak population.
