On 21 June 2008, the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM) agreed to submit their dispute on the Abyei area boundaries to the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague.

The tribunal will consist of five arbitrators, two to be nominated by each party and a fifth to be nominated by the designated arbitrators.
