Presentation of the case

Khieu Samphan was the Head of State (Chairman of the State Presidium), leader within the Centre Political Office (Office 870) and member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK). He allegedly directed, encouraged or enforced the CPK policy between April 1975 and January 1979 characterized by murder, extermination, imprisonment, persecution and other inhumane acts such as forcible transfers of the population, enslavement and forced labour.

On 19 November 2007, Khieu Samphan was placed under detention and charged by the ECCC for crimes against humanity (murder, extermination, imprisonment, persecution and other inhumane acts) and war crimes (willful killing, causing great suffering, unlawful deportation or transfer or unlawful confinement of a civilian).

The trial of Khieu Samphan before the ECCC is likely to start in 2008.
