The Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL), the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the Peace Palace Library are organising a two-day conference in The Hague on 7 and 8 December to mark the 60th anniversary of the Genocide Convention.
To mark the anniversary, an interdisciplinary panel composed of both historians and lawyers will examine how to achieve a proper balance between the popular perception of genocide and its legal definition, based on the 1948 Convention.
Introduction
As the concept of genocide becomes more widely used and there is a prevailing tendency to call each and every massacre "genocide", the aim of this conference is to re-orient the discussions around the term.
The speakers will analyse the differences between the popular perception and the rigid legal analysis of genocide. The conference will provide participants with both historical and legal considerations.
Speakers scheduled for the conference include ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Campo, Prof. Dr. Göran Sluiter, Prof. Dr. Liesbeth Zegveld, Prof. Dr. William Schabas and Prof. Dr. Michael Marrus.

The language of the conference will be English.
Deadline for registration: 21 November 2008
Registration fee: Participants pay € 50 (for students registration is free of charge).
