The Netherlands Red Cross

General introduction
NL Red Cross logoThe Netherlands Red Cross seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering and to improve the situation of vulnerable people. The Netherlands Red Cross helps, protects and takes care of people that are victims of war, conflict and disaster, and those who need assistance because of other circumstances. By promoting respect for international humanitarian law it hopes to strengthen the protection of human dignity and to reduce and alleviate the suffering of those affected by armed conflict.

The Netherlands Red Cross Society was established in 1867. Its branch structure covers the entire country. Currently, there are approximately 334 branches. At a higher level these branches co-operate in 69 districts. They in turn are supported by professional staff of the National Office. At a local level the work is carried out by some 33,000 volunteers. The Netherlands Red Cross is supported by 610,000 contributing members and donors who provide financial assistance on a regular basis. Its turnover in 2006 was € 58.8 million.

The professional staff at the National Office carries out a variety of tasks delegated to them by the Society (among other activities international assistance, dissemination of international humanitarian law, tracing, special accommodation and care for terminally ill children). It supports the districts, and represents the organisation internationally. The staff consists of approximately 425 persons (275 full-time).

The International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Division of the Netherlands Red Cross disseminates the principles and rules of IHL law among key actors such as the Dutch armed forces, members of parliament, academics and students, and journalists. At the same time they strive to disseminate and explain IHL to the broader public to the highest degree possible.

The Netherlands Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The Movement consists of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the 185 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Together they form the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
