Hadžić, Goran

In 1992, Goran Hadžić was elected President of the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina, a territory seized from Croatia by Serbs in rebellion against Croatia’s declaration of independence. He held this position until December 1993.

According to the indictment, which was made public on 16 July 2004, Hadžić was involved in the forcible removal and murder of thousands of Croatian civilians and other non-Serbs between 1991 and 1993.  Hadžić is accused of 14 crimes against humanity and violations of laws or customs of war. His indictment specifically names the 1991 massacre of 250 Croatian and non-Serb civilians from the Vukovar hospital in one of the first atrocities of the war.

After 8 years on the run, Goran Hadžić was arrested on 20 July 2011, in the region of Fruska Gora, northwest of Belgrade.

Hadžić made his first appearance before the ICTY on 25 July 2011. He declined to enter a plea and was granted an additional 30 days to consider the charges against him.
